There are a fair few grassroots football coaching apps out there, and no single one covers everything a grassroots coach or team manager needs. Session planning, availability and payments, playing-time rotation, and season stats are four different jobs, so this is a shortlist of the ones we've actually found useful for each, not a lab test of every app on the App Store.
The first two picks below are Football Parent's own Coach App, which we built because two of those four jobs, equal playing time and season stats, weren't being solved well enough by anything else out there. That's disclosed here rather than hidden.
Best Grassroots Football Apps at a Glance
- Best all-rounder for a single grassroots team: Football Parent Coach App
- Best for equal playing time: Football Parent Coach App
- Best for drills and session planning: FootballDNA
- Best for availability and payments: Spond
Each pick is explained below, including exactly where it's genuinely stronger than the alternatives, not just why it made the list.
How We Picked These
Each pick below answers one specific job a grassroots coach or team manager actually has, rather than trying to crown one app "best overall." A club chasing subs by text message has a different problem to a coach who turns up to training with no plan, and a single app rarely fixes both well.
Where we've used an app ourselves, that's said plainly. Where we haven't, the pick is based on what the app is actually built and priced to do, checked against its own current pricing and feature pages rather than old reviews, since app pricing changes often enough that a two-year-old comparison article is frequently wrong.
Best All-Rounder for Grassroots Coaches: Football Parent Coach App
Football Parent's Coach App is the pick here for a single grassroots team wanting one app that covers squad management, scheduling, lineups, a live match tracker and season stats, without needing a club-wide platform built for leagues or multi-team clubs. We're open about being the ones making it. If your team is still doing this on a football team spreadsheet, tallying goals and appearances by hand after every match, this is what that process looks like once it's automatic: log goals, cards and substitutions as they happen, and appearances, goals, assists and cards are calculated from what actually happened, not hand-counted afterwards.
I'd call mine the best all-rounder because it's easy to collect stats without extra admin. That's the gap I kept running into with a spreadsheet: the stats were only ever as good as whether I remembered to update them after a match.
Squad management, scheduling and the team selector are free. Live match stats, full season stats and tournament day sit behind a £2.99-a-month plan. It's built for one grassroots team, a head coach, assistant or team manager, rather than a whole club's operation.
Best for Equal Playing Time: Football Parent Coach App
Football Parent's Coach App is the pick here because it builds equal-time rotation directly into its team selector: switch it on and it handles the rotation for you, rather than leaving you to work out fair minutes in your head on a Sunday morning with ten children, one pitch, and a match that won't pause for the maths. We've written separately about why equal playing time matters so much for kids at this age, if you want the wider context.
This is the one problem we built the app specifically to solve, and it's free: squad management, scheduling, the team selector with equal-time rotation, and organising a live match don't sit behind a paywall. Most team-management apps are built around admin and messaging first, and treat playing time as an afterthought if they handle it at all.
Best for Drills and Session Planning: FootballDNA
FootballDNA is a session-planning and coaching-content platform: drills, full session plans and coaching video across age groups, plus tools for building your own sessions. It solves a different problem to the team-admin picks above: what to actually coach on a Tuesday night, rather than scheduling or availability.
I use FootballDNA myself for sessions and drills. It's the one I go to when I need a proper plan for training rather than making it up on the way to the pitch.
FootballDNA has a free content tier alongside its paid membership, so it's worth trying before deciding whether the fuller library is worth paying for. If your actual problem is "what do I coach this week," this is the pick, not a team-management app with a drills section bolted on.

Log every goal, assist and man of the match from the touchline.
See how it worksBest for Availability and Payments: Spond
Spond is free to download and use, with no subscription and no per-player fee: the core app, including availability tracking, event scheduling, group messaging and payment collection, costs nothing up front. Spond makes its money on a transaction fee when a club actually collects payment through the app, published in the UK at 2.5% plus 20p per transaction, not on a monthly plan.
Spond is better than my own app at availability tracking and payments. I haven't built payment collection into the Coach App yet, so if a coach's biggest headache is chasing subs or kit money, Spond currently does that job better than I do.
If your team's main admin pain is "who's coming Sunday" and "who still owes me for the tour," Spond's free-plus-transaction-fee model is built specifically for that, in a way a lineup-and-stats app isn't.
What About TeamStats and Pitchero?
TeamStats is free for match lineups, basic stats and a team website, but availability tracking and financial tools sit behind its Plus plan (£5 a month at the time of writing).
Pitchero is built more for a whole club than a single team: its free plan covers one team, but its paid tiers (from £38 a month) are priced and scoped for clubs running up to 20 or more teams, with a shared club website, multiple email accounts and payment processing built in. If you're coaching one team rather than running a club, you're likely paying for scale you don't need.
Apps We Didn't Include
FA Matchday is the FA's own free app, but it sits on top of the Whole Game System as the official record for fixtures, results and league-registered player clearance. It's built for affiliated-league admin, not as a single team's day-to-day coaching or stats tool, so it's answering a different question to the rest of this list.
Mingle is a genuine Spond alternative built around similar availability and admin features, but doesn't currently offer a distinct strength over Spond for a UK grassroots team, so we haven't given it its own section here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Spond really free?
Yes. The app itself, including availability tracking, messaging and event scheduling, has no subscription and no per-player charge. Spond earns money only when a club processes a payment through the app, via a published transaction fee, currently 2.5% plus 20p per transaction in the UK.
What is the best football coaching app?
There isn't one single best football coaching app, because coaching a grassroots team covers several different jobs. Football Parent's Coach App is strongest for equal playing time and automatic season stats, FootballDNA for drills and session planning, and Spond for availability and payments. Which is "best" depends on which of those jobs is actually your team's biggest headache.
Is there a free coaching app available?
Yes, on both sides of this list. Football Parent's Coach App is free for squad management, scheduling, the team selector with equal-time rotation, and organising a live match. FootballDNA has a free content tier for drills and sessions, and Spond's core app is free with no subscription at all.
Is there an app for keeping track of playing time?
Football Parent's Coach App builds equal-time rotation into its free team selector, so it's calculated as you pick your lineup rather than as a separate step, without needing a standalone tracker.
